Ways to go Green in Your Apartment

Some people have the mistaken idea that you have to own an apartment in order to take steps to conserve energy and protect the environment.This is far from truth;going green is a matter of how you live, not where you live.

Going green doesn't have to mean adding permanent installations to your landscape or building. A few simple things you can do today to help reduce your environmental impact, save money, and live a healthier & happier life.

The financial savings may surprise you, once you do a quick assessment of your apartment and how much energy can be saved.

Here are some easy ways to embrace the environment in apartment life.


Lights: Install Compact Fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) when your older incandescent bulbs burns out. CFL bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use a quarter of the energy.

Invest in Green Appliances: Look for energy star labels on any appliance you buy. They are certified to use less electricity and they don't cost any more than other appliances. They conserve energy through advanced design, less startup time and auto shut-off's.

Electricity Thieves: Even if appliances are turned off but plugged in continue to draw power from outlets. Unplug or switch off (not power off on remotes) TV's / DVD's , cell phone chargers, toasters that you use for part of the day. These small changes can add up to a big difference in your energy consumption.

Reduce Waste: Many apartments have recycling programs for residents that can help you started on reducing waste in your apartment. Also look for recycled paper products like paper towels, toilet tissue and facial tissues.

Grow Green: Whether you have a balcony, a patio or simply sunny window, make a point to grow plants in your apartment. Not only plants are aesthetically pleasing, they are also great for reducing pollutants in the air.

Save Water: Turn off water while brushing your teeth. Fill the sink with shallow amount of water and pre-rinse dishes before washing them. Install a low flow shower head. They don't cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment. Skip bottled water and bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than a plastic. Not only bottle water is expensive, they generate large amounts of container waste.

Cut Down Junk Mail: Yellow pages has an online service to cancel the phone book. Avoid bank statement or mobile bill statements by post, you can always ask for an e-copy.

Programable Thermostat: Setting your thermostat 3 to 5 degrees lower while you are asleep and while no one is at home will lower your utility bills and save energy. Switching your room temperature by only two degrees can save a large amount of carbon emissions.
